Racism on Campus Recap

Michigan State students first began protesting in support of students that called for the resignation of University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe.  This sparked a national movement throughout american  college campuses.  The Black Student Alliance at MSU helped to organize the student marches and rallies that tried to bring attention to the racial issues on campus. Students demanded for changes in MSU one being that a hinger enrollment be in place for urban areas. The undergraduate number of African American students at MSU is only 7% percent, according to statistics at College Portraits. "People should approach it directly otherwise people will think that stuff is okay," said MSU student Nayirah Muhammad

MSU students are not the only ones to follow in the footsteps of protestors at Missouri. At Ithaca College between chanting and silence it is estimated that 1,000 people participated in the protest, according to the Daily Campus. Wolfe and R. Bowen Lofton, chancellor of the Columbus campus at Missouri resigned on November 19, 2015 . Mike Middleton a retired deputy chancellor of the Columbia campus was chosen to be the next university president at Missouri. The issue of race and oppression on college campuses have made national headlines, so far as drawing attention from the Obama administration, according to the Center of Research on Globalization. Though the administration states that it can not personally intervene with the issue. MSU students still have a long process when it comes down to ending racism on campus.

Michigan State University students protested outside of the Bill Clinton forum at the Kellogg Center in hopes that concerns of racism on campus would be heard.  The protesting came after the open dialog university President Lou Anna K. Simon and MSU adminstration had with students regarding racial concerns.  However,  some students did not feel that the conversation answered all their questions and began to organize protests in order to  get the answers they needed.

Alternative Spring Break Recap

Michigan State University students can volunteer their time over spring break with organizations such as the Alternative Spartan Breaks. The ASB organization have both domestic and international trips offered to students. During spring of 2015 the ASB will be having domestic trips and  international trips. The price for the whole trip is $425 dollars, however that does not include shopping, meals out, or lodging. When going to another country students should have a general historical concept of the land. This will help the students to close the gaps of two different cultures, ,and understand the people that they are helping more.

Student that can't afford to go far, but still want to help there are humane societies, and soup centers in the East Lansing area. For students that want to go home and still have fun one way is to vacation with the family to another state or five star attraction.
